I scream, you scream, we all scream for… CAKE! Cake is the winner when it comes to a consistent must-have ingredient in any celebration be it a birthday party, wedding, or congratulatory event. And who better to get your cake from than the one and only Kristin Kato from A Cake Life.
A Cake Life has been proudly featured by Martha Stewart Weddings as one of the top 63 pastry pros in the country and selected by Brides Magazine as one of the top 100 cake designers in the country. They were also awarded “Best of Weddings” by the Knot and Wedding Wire’s Couples Choice award, both just last year.
I got a chance to meet up with Kristin and dig some morsels of goodness worth sharing!
Kristin, a proud graduate of Roosevelt High School (can I get a whoop whoop for my Alma mater?!), first opened A Cake Life in 2009 baking out of her home. A true believer of hard work, she left her attorney dreams behind to pursue a business in baking after being inspired by popular shows like Cake Wars and scored an amazing seventy jobs in her first year of business! Her company has since grown to add another handful of assistants and can pump out an amazing 1000 cakes per year (about half of them for weddings) which is no surprise considering she fuels the life of her company with passion, growth, and a true sense of family for her employees.
Here’s a sneak peek behind-the-scenes just before they cleaned up for the night.
All those contracts? No biggie. Just the Saturday and Sunday orders on display so her sugar artists can easily see them all while still covered in… Sugar. Just a regular weekend order displayed here. [insert wide eyed emoji]
You can find her almost every day from morning to well past sunset meeting with clients, supporting her team, and making sure each cake is made to perfection. After hours, she’s at home personally fielding and most times answering all the emails that get sent to her company’s inbox until the wee hours. Her dedication is admirable and inspiring. After getting to know her more, her humbling nature makes her even more likable though she is as successful as they come in this business.
Though it’s not advertised on her website, she can make custom cakes for the allergy sensitive or health-nut. Eggless, gluten-free, and dairy-free too! She is also open to dabbling in different flavors… prune cake? Absolutely! In fact, she even makes “fake” cakes for those of you who would like a full-on gorgeous four-tiered cake but only need to feed 50.
If you’re not already interested after checking out her instagram feed @ACakeLife, you’ll be blown away after your first scheduled appointment and cake tasting. Her cakes are insanely moist and fork-licking delicious… I can vouch and will continue to taste-test for anyone interested. 🙂 Prior to your meeting, be sure to have set your colors, description/inspiration photos, and budget for your cake. And if you’re interested in mixing cake and frosting flavors, let her know at least 24 hours in advance. Check out her website here for more information
The best part? She and beau Grant (her handy do-it-all right hand man) still enjoy cake Every. Single. Day.
